Organized RC racing uses a structure of “classes” that define the sort of chassis, body, motor, tires, etc such that similar cars compete against each other. Most of the cars we run are built for the purpose of competitive racing, and are considered “hobby” grade as opposed to “toy” grade cars (we still call them toys!). If you’re new and not certain what you would like to race, I highly recommend coming out on a race day… folks will be happy to talk to you about the options and explain some of the terms below that you may not be familiar with. Spectators and interested folks are always welcome to attend!
The classes below are sometimes combined, variances are occasionally granted for specific reasons, and we generally adapt as required to make the best race experience for all.
On Road Classes
Most of N-Control weekly on road racing involves 10th scale electric RC cars. There are four classes that use a 4WD sedan chassis, in order of increasing speed: Vintage Trans-Am, Hypercar, Stock Touring, Modified Touring. We also race a spec class of Front Wheel Drive cars.
Several times a year, we host special events designed to include nitro and electric 8th scale cars.
Vintage Trans-Am (VTA) is a 4WD sedan chassis, vintage muscle car body, 25.5T motor, blinky ESC, Gravity USGT tires. Battery limit is 2S and 8.40 volts. Minimum weight is 1350 grams.
Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) is a 4WD sedan chassis, LMH or USGT body, Gravity USGT motor, blinky ESC, spec touring tires. Battery limit is 2S and 8.40 volts. Minimum weight is 1350 grams.
Stock Touring Car is a 4WD sedan chassis, touring car body, 17.5T motor, blinky ESC, spec touring tires. Battery limit is 2S and 8.40 volts. Minimum weight is 1320 grams.
Modified Touring (Mod) is a 4WD sedan chassis, touring car body, open motor and ESC, spec touring tires. Battery limit is 2S and 8.40 volts. Minimum weight is 1320 grams. This class does not often race.
Front Wheel Drive (FWD) is a front wheel drive chassis, FWD body, Hobbywing Justock 17.5T motor/ESC combo, FDR of 4.0, spec touring tires. Battery limit is 2S and 8.40 volts. Minimum weight is 1250 grams.
Dirt Oval Classes
The dirt oval features several different types of cars. This class list is generally in order of experience of those who race each class. The list will include a brief description of the class, and several have a more detailed summary below. All classes run 2S batteries, and there are not weight requirements on the dirt oval.
Novice is a class for newer racers. Any vehicle of generally appropriate size and speed can compete. Drivers will need to exhibit reasonable control over their car, and should have some wheel time before entering competition. If you have any doubts, please see Paul on a race day.
Traxxas Modified is a spec class requiring the car of the same name, with very limited changes available. This is a great chaoice for the newer racer, as the car is extremely durable and getting set up to race is (almost) as simple as buying one. See below for more details.
Slash Super Stock is a spec class with detailed rules. The class uses a Traxxas Slash, the most popular hobby grade RC car. See below for more details.
Street Stock is a 2WD buggy chassis, Street Stock body, 13.5T motor, blinky ESC, and open tires.
10.5 Carbon is a class for buggy based carbon conversion cars with rear steer arms. 10.5T motor, blinky ESC, open tires. See below for body options.
Outlaw Carbon is a class for buggy based carbon conversion cars with rear steer arms. Open motor and ESC, open tires. See below for body options.
Traxxas Modified
Traxxas Modified is a box stock class for the car of the same name. No parts may be removed, no alternative parts may be employed except as explicitly allowed below.
1. Gearing. Track specific spec pinion, stock spur. At N-Control, this is the stock gearing of 23/86.
2. Radio. Any radio system. No gyro.
3. Battery connector. Any battery connector.
4. Battery. 2S 5200 mAh 50C limit.
5. Tires. Stock style tires/inserts/wheels only. Must show tread. If multiple compounds become available, can run any compound.
6. Tuning. Can use any tuning options included in box and any shock and diff oils. May make all available adjustments to camber, preload, etc. No internal shock limiters allowed. No added weight.
7. Graphics. Can wrap body, or run painted body once clear option is available. Can apply stickers it paint over stock body. Must run numbers.
If the rules do not explicitly allow something, it’s not allowed.
Slash Super Stock
For more details about this class, see the Slash Super Stock rules.
Carbon Class Bodies
For race day management, N-Control elects to combine several different classes that are typically separated but use the same motor/ESC rules into 10.5 Carbon and Outlaw Carbon.
In these two classes, racers can configure their cars as Late Model, Sprint, or Midwest Modified. While we do occasionally separate out one or more class from the others, you can expect them to generally race together.
